are dalmatians good dogs?
i want to know if they shed very much? or slobber alot? are they easy to train? are they ok being left alone? do they have major heath problems? are they easy to groom? add in any other info.
I own a Dallie myself & I can tell you something about them. They DO shed like crazy! Short haired breeds shed more than long haired breeds but because their hair are short, you don't really see much on the floor or furniture because it is not as visible as the long haired dogs' fur. They are hyper active dogs & will be very hard to control if not trained & socialized from young. Training should start by the age of 2 months. The younger the better. Dallies are known to be deaf & blind. A well bred dog will be less likely to have these two major problems. My Dallie is perfectly fine & healthy because I got her from a good breeder. They can be hard to train if NOT started early. Dallies have this certain trait where they can become submissive at times. I have met other Dallies that have this problem. Most Dallies I have met so far are aggressive because their owners don't know how to control them properly & that's why about 10% of dogs in shelters here in Malaysia are Dallies. Dallies in my country are kinda like treated as mutts already. It's certainly not the dogs' fault nor the breed, it's the owners' fault for not training them. They tend to be in their own world at times. When training a Dallie, it may take some time for the dog to get it. They are not stupid, they are just stubborn & sometimes have the "whatever" or "I don't want to do this anymore" attitude. They know the commands well but just refuse to do it at times. My Dallie is Malaysia's top winning Dalmatian both in OB & in Conformation. Yes she is hard to train at times but it is NOT impossible to train this breed. They just need some firm handling, you need to be consistent & very PATIENT with them. Last but not least, the Dalmatian is not for the inexperienced dog owners.
